I’ve been looking forward to this for a while, and I whee’d when an ARC of The Blood Gospel arrived on my doorstep…
James Rollins’ and Rebecca Cantrell’s The Blood Gospel has (a bit of) archaeology plus (a lot of) heart-pounding good-vs-evil save-the-world action, with biblical figures and a bit of the otherworldly mixed in.
Dr. Erin Granger is on a dig site when a helicopter comes to pick her up and before she knows it, she’s flying off to parts unknown with the soldiers sent for her. When they land at the site of an earthquake, she learns that there may be something hidden in the caverns under her feet, something that some people would go to great lengths to possess. But nobody will tell her what — not Jordan, the soldier running the site exploration, nor Father Rhun, the hooded priest who was on the helicopter with her.
Then the “some people” show up, bringing more death and destruction, and the story takes off… There’s lots of action, and its pace doesn’t let up once it starts. Erin soon learns that the priest is way more than meets the eye, and the three of them are part of some doomsday prophecy. The question now is, can they win this battle?
If you liked Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code you’ll want to pick up The Blood Gospel. I really enjoyed the story, the plot was intriguing, and the pace kept me flipping pages way past my bedtime. The one thing I didn’t care for was how often the villains’ bad-ness was stated. Wouldn’t that be why they’re the villain?
I thought the ending was a bit abrupt and obvious, especially given the length of the book (and the set-up). But I cannot wait for the next book to find out what happens next.
drey’s rating: Excellent!
