meet me at the cupcake cafedrey’s thoughts:

Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe is a story of friendship, love, and opportunity knocking. And what happens when you actually answer…

Isabel Randall worries about her grandfather’s failing health, her boyfriend’s inability to commit, and her biological clock ticking. She’d like to get Graeme to put a ring on it as she’d like to have children, and she’d like to be able to introduce him to her grandfather, but Graeme’s slippery as an eel in that regard. Well, that should‘ve told her something, but Issy is an expert at ignoring things she doesn’t want to see…

Then she’s laid off. By Graeme (by the company, actually, but since he delivered the message…). And never mind the whole office-romance thing, the least he could do after was call!

When Issy considers HR’s sage advice, I cheered. Who hasn’t wished they could start something of their own, instead of working for someone else? I know I have, but I also know I can’t bake for anything other than personal consumption (because I don’t care what it looks like, lol!)… And when she takes the steps to open her own place, I cheered again. A whole new beginning, from cafe to potential love-interest.

I loved the optimism that’s found between the pages of Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe. Not that everything’s rosy and happy, mind you – but it eventually finds its way there, and the journey is what makes this worth reading. Issy is fun and airy, but with a good head on her shoulders. Her best friend Helena is witty and sarcastic, the perfect foil. Her first employee, Pearl, is similar, but with a side of good humor and a touch of brutal honesty that has you enjoying her scenes. The story is entertaining throughout, and there’s even a little bit of a dastardly plot to overcome before we get to the final page.

All in all, Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe is an enjoyable read that’s definitely worth adding to your beach-read pile! But a few words of warning: do not read while hungry, or you’ll find yourself running to a bakery to pick up a couple (or more) cupcakes – unless you’re a baker like Issy, but then you’d have to put the book down and that won’t do! ;)

drey’s rating: Pick it up!
