I’ve been impatiently waiting for The Dream Thieves, and it’s almost here – release date is September 17th!
I loved Maggie Stiefvater’s story and characters in The Raven Boys, and couldn’t wait to get my hands on more Blue and
the her Aglionby boys. The first book was about characters and story, with a little bit of the paranormal to whet your appetite.
This one is characters, story, and a whole slew of the paranormal. Gansey’s search for Glendower, Adam’s promise to Cabeswater, Ronan’s nightmarish dreams, all come to a head in this second installment. There’s also the addition of a hit man hunting for the Greywaren followed by others hunting the same (though we don’t really get to know them like we do the hit man), and more of the really obnoxious Kavinsky’s nemesis-to-Ronan upping the stakes in a real life-or-death showdown. (I had to read that last part a few times to make sure it’s right. It looks right to me, I hope that’s not just in my head…)
I do have to say that The Dream Thieves started out slowly for me, with Blue-drama, Ronan-drama, and Adam-drama. I’m not big on drama, but here it provides a look into the lives of these very different people who’re all together for a common cause – in this case, the cause is as simple as keeping a world from falling apart. Easier said than done, huh?
By the end, I’m amazed all over again at Stiefvater’s storytelling skills. She parses things out as you
need want it, balances drama and action deftly, and leaves you wondering “what now?”… The only disappointment is that I have to wait I-don’t-know-how-long for the next one, especially since The Dream Thieves isn’t officially out until next week! *sigh* Someone send me a time-machine? Please?
drey’s rating: Excellent!
