Teenage Lynn has been taught to defend her pond against every threat: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and most important, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty—or doesn't leave at all. Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. But when strangers appear, the mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won't stop until they get it...

drey’s thoughts:

Lynn’s world is a tough, harsh, and dry one. Water is the scarce commodity, and those who have protect it with their lives, those who don’t try to get it from those who do. Lynn and her mother have a little pond that their lives revolve around. Getting the water from the pond a bucket at a time, hauling that water for purifying (so they don’t get sick and die), laying out jars to collect rainwater, picking it up after a rainfall… And then there’s also the keeping watch for others, planting food and hunting for meat, chopping firewood, and before you know it you only (barely) have time left over to sleep. I got tired just reading this book!

Mindy McGinnis doesn’t pull any punches in Not a Drop to Drink. This is first and foremost a gritty and brutal story of survival, one set in a not-too-farfetched future. Lynn herself is as tough as the world she lives in, doing anything necessary to survive and protect what’s hers. Then signs of strangers appear, tragedy strikes, and Lynn’s world is turned upside down. She’s adamant about doing things herself so she doesn’t have to share her scarce resource – but can she be that person?

I really enjoyed Not a Drop to Drink, with its stark telling, spare backdrop, and character focus. Lynn eventually gets to know her neighbor, finds out her own background, helps one group of strangers, and takes the fight to another. She’s got a good head, learns she has a good heart, and isn’t afraid to take a stand – all characteristics to admire in anyone, let alone a teenager. All in all, this one should be read and re-read, then followed quickly by its sequel In a Handful of Dust (coming in September, so apparently I jumped the gun a bit early on this one!).

drey’s rating: Excellent!
