Keep your friends close but your enemies within stabbing distance.
One important lesson I’ve learned in the assassination business is that to be the best you have to roll with the punches. Now that I’m queen of Ashland’s underworld — by default, not by choice — a lot more punches are being thrown my way. But I suppose that’s the price of victory for taking down some of the underworld’s top dogs. Good thing I have my Ice and Stone magic to help me survive my volatile new position. Just when I think things are finally settling down, someone tries to murder me during a hush-hush underworld meeting. But the real surprise is how strangely familiar my shadowy assailant seems to be.
My job is to maintain order among killers, crooks, and thieves, and soon I’m embroiled in a bloody game where the ability to keep secrets could be the greatest superpower of all. My enemies have all sharpened their knives and laid their traps, waiting for me to fall. But this Spider weaves her own webs of death…
Disclosure: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The Plot: A metal elemental is in town, and his actions are putting Gin’s loved ones in danger – not something she overlooks, or forgives.
As de facto boss of the Ashland underworld (not something she’s ever wanted, but it’s what she’s got and where she is), Gin’s mediating a dispute when something seems off, a bomb blows up, and Gin faces a villain who’s not even there for her. Or is he?
History rears its head in this 13th installment of Estep’s popular series about an assassin with heart, and not recent history either. This one’s got Gin baffled until a few things click into place – and she realizes just how dangerous a foe the metal elemental is…
The Characters: I wondered where Estep would take Gin as a character – which, honestly, I wonder in any series that hits the double-digits. Gin’s still involved in Ashland’s underworld, she’s still getting hurt trying to protect people, where else could she go?
The answer is “history”. Gin’s to some extent, but also her foster father’s – and his stance on not harming children. Sometimes monsters just have to be put down when you find them…
There’s more hemming and hawing than I’d like – Gin’s the big boss now, she should just pull up her big girl panties and get things done. (I’m not the only one who points it out, by the way…) In any case, Gin gets things taken care of, acquiring a whole passel more wounds that need fixing along the way.
The Story: Spider’s Trap has Gin’s past rearing its head in a story of vengeance. Don’t worry, Karma is (still) a bitch, and just desserts are delivered with a bang (pun intended). This one’ll be a must-read for fans of the series, and those who enjoy their urban fantasy with a kick-ass heroine, more than a dash of danger, and a romance to boot, should definitely start with Spider’s Bite.
drey’s rating: Excellent!
